Colors...how do you pick one?

The best way for me to advise someone
 on which color to pick,
whether it is paint or fabric,
without visiting their space is to tell them
to find an inspiration point first.

A beautiful purple platter...
can be the inspiration for the room in which it hangs.

A magazine cover that you admire...
can create the color palette for your room.

A movie star's dress...
can translate into your drapery color.

A favorite toile fabric used for a slipcover....
can lead you to your wall color.

The color of a flower...
was how this swing got it's new color.

a favorite painting...
a cushion in a cheerful fabric...
or a vintage dress...
 are other items that can
lead you to your color.

Inspiration Points!
This designer secret is well know to the industry.
Find yours to get started and
 let the colors flow naturally.

  1. I could not agree more about the inspiration points. It was fun seeing things that have inspired spots in and around your house.
I have that same purple platter hanging in my bedroom.

  2. I am a huge fan of starting with magazines and tearing out pages. After a while, you get a sense of what draws you in. Whether it is a style or color. This is a great post!

  3. I'm easily inspired by color but extremely slow to decide on one. My trouble is I like ALL of them. I should just paint a rainbow on my walls...haha!

  5. A great question for a Color Specialist. Yes, inspiration pieces are very important. Here are some of the ones I've used for clients over the years:

    Food
    Tapestry
    Rugs
    Flowers
    Beach glass
    Artwork
    Shoes
    Jewelry
    Bedding
and the most fun was just 2 weeks ago. A client wanted his color scheme to be just like the Anasazi Hotel in Santa Fe. How fun is that?
