Kitchen is Done!


 The kitchen remodel is finished!  I will be sharing the behind the scenes 
and how-tos another day.  Today is just showing how it all looks with the new countertops, 
back splash and sink in place.  Above is the mini hutch I created out of the cabinet 
over the stove that was never used for anything..
 I added bead board wallpaper to the interior to finish it off 
and it has added lots of charm to the tiny kitchen.
 The new Formica counter tops spiffed up the kitchen and gave it a much lighter look.
  I hit the edges of the Formica with Old White Chalk Paint and it rendered the seams almost invisible. 
Tip: don't order the new FX Formica with a "custom edge" That is the old style black line edge. Order it with a "preformed edge" to get the formica without any seams showing.
 The big excitement was retrofitting a vintage 1940's drainboard sink into the scheme. 
 Hubs and I love this sink! It is as deep as the old one was and is wider by quite a bit. 
Yes we LOVE this old sink!
Here is the kitchen before painting cabs, new counter tops and sink.
And the after~overall this kitchen is so much brighter now!
 The star of the day~chips and all~from Craigslist for $75 from one man's cellar 
to my kitchen!  We put in a new faucet with a gooseneck silhouette. 
Hubs did the plumbing work, and I was his number one helper.
Does anyone need any dishes washed?

    So very pretty. You had a vision and now it is complete. Great Job!! I agree with Betsy painting the edge of the Formica fixed that pesky dark edge that Formica always has. It looks amazing. Thanks for sharing it with us.

    Amy I really have to hand it to you...OUTSTANDING JOB!!!! What a great makeover, its such a pretty and inviting space, the counterops really look good as does that great vintage sink and you know I love the cabinet color. Fabulously done!

    Oh my goodness! It's just a breath of fresh air! I love how cottagey it looks and especially love that farmhouse style sink. I remember when I got my new faucet years ago. My husband and I would actually fight over who was going to get to use it first. Ha! Sorry to say, that didn't last long though. Now, it's all me! Now you'll be able to enjoy your new kitchen in time for Thanksgiving!

    Your kitchen looks marvelous! I love the beadboard wallpaper you've put inside your cabinets! I've got to get some of that stuff! Your new countertops look like marble - how pretty they are. The old farm sink is gorgeous! I love it.

    I love it all! Purple is my favorite color, so of course I love the dishes. I'm coveting that sink- how was it installed? Does the drain board just sit on top of the counter?

    Morning Amy,

    Love the new kitchen and the first thing I looked for was those sink chips.
    When I saw that you did not try to paint them, I thought It to myself..

    YES!!! She left the chips there! So much vintage charm.

    Love the cupboard over the stovetop...I think we all have those useless cabinets. They are either over the stove or the fridge...a man must have designed those things. I don't think I know a woman that finds them useful as closed cabinets. Removing the doors was brilliant.

    Ahhhhhhhhhhhhhh!!! It's wonderful! I'm madly, head over heels in love with the sink. Wow... the little cubby with the dishes was so clever and looks so good too. And the faux marble looks amazing, i love it that a blogger told you the trick with the white along the edge, i can't see it at all now. You're probably going to end up in a magazine again soon with this kitchen!

    Amy, The kitchen turned out beautiful. Such a great idea converting the space above the hood to display your beautiful transferware. My son has the same sink in his 1920's home and I have always loved it.

    OK, I am having sink envy! I have been looking for one of those. We had one in the house that I grew up in. Love how you put the display cabinet above the stove. The countertop looks like real marble! What a transformation! I'm sure you are really enjoying it.

    Would you mind telling us what colour and kind of paint you used on the seam-line? I mean white obviously but what white matched the laminate so well? And is it regular wallpaint?

    I'm really in love with your kitchen and its details. I love how soft the white is, not stark or cold at all.

    Thanks for all the nice comments on the kitchen! I used Annie Sloan Old White chalk paint on the cabinets as well for touching up the formica seams. The bead board wallpaper used for the backsplash came from Home Depot online and was martha stewart brand. The formica countertops were ordered at Lowes. The sink was a random find from Craigslist, the first one I saw had sold, so I kept looking and two days later another one popped up so I jumped on it. The sink was installed by cutting out a hole on the countertop and then it just rests on the top, but was secured with a silicone adhesive. The faucet I found online at Lightinthebox.com.

    Hi Amy, I forgot to ask yesterday, is this paint washable ? I plan to paint my kitchen cabinets with chalk paint and I just want to make sure I'll be able to clean them when needed. I suppose it's not a problem if I apply wax.

    Hi, I have a question about the mounting of your sink. Was there a way to mount it flush with the cabinets or was resting it on top the only way? I've got a sink like this and envision int as mounted flush into new countertops. Thanks!
