February has always been a favorite month for me~
its my birthday month!
This illustration was drawn by an old friend
who I never get to see anymore,
so I really treasure it.
She drew herself whispering in my ear at my birthday party.
The funny thing is we never were childhood friends,
we met as young moms.
So the idea that she would create such a drawing
for me showing us as childhood friends was quite special.
She drew in lavender streamers, knowing I loved purple and pink.
She even had me wearing a crown!
Its been in this old pink frame for years now.
I had told her that on my birthday my mom
would always bake me a cake using a heart shaped pan,
because my birthday is the day after Valentines Day.
because my birthday is the day after Valentines Day.
A heart shaped cake~! None of my other 4 siblings would
get a heart shaped cake~so it made me feel special.
Something so simple had such power.
That is what birthdays are all about, don't you agree?
It is the one day in the year to get to feel extra special.
This hand made card and my heart shaped cakes
over the years always did that for me.
I am the keeper of the heart shaped pans now~
and every year I make a cake!
Last year I shared my heart shaped cake here~
how fun it is to look back and see my old brown kitchen,
knowing it is all white and pretty now!
I'll be making it again this year~and I'll be baking a heart shaped cake
for my little step son too, as we share February birthdays.
Do you have a birthday tradition that makes you feel special?
Such a sweet and special keepsake of your friendship, Amy! Nowadays birthdays are more about seeing how excited my kids get to surprise me with gifts and especially if they are things they made. I bet your boys have given you some special things over the years!
ReplyDeleteAmy, that drawing is adorable, what a treasure! When you spoke about your cake and how your mom made it special for you definitely made me misty, very sweet! Must be the mom in me ;) Your place looks great by the way, love the pink tulips! :)
ReplyDeleteWhat a talented friend...I hope she is producing her drawings they are fabulous! What a sweet tradition with the heart shaped cake...even if you do make it yourself!

Oh gosh, your kitchen looks so different now, Amy, compared to that picture! Isn't it amazing how its transformed. I think that a lot of times kids with birthdays on or very close to a holiday get/feel cheated. My sister-in-law is two days after Christmas; she always felt cheated. Mine is on Halloween and, while I didn't feel cheated, it's not always the best birthday when you spend the day handing out candy!
ReplyDeleteI love this post - such a sweet drawing from your friend! Having a heart-shaped cake is indeed a special birthday treat!

Amy, What day in February is your birthday???
ReplyDeleteThat little drawing is beyond sweet and precious. I love her whispering in your ear, with her little freckles and all the detail! No wonder you treasure it, and it's in such a cute little pink frame. Isn't it funny how something like a heart shaped cake can make you feel like the most special person in the world! And your cake going to look beautiful in your gorgeous kitchen!

Early Happy Birthday!
ReplyDeleteMy MIL gave me the heart shape cake pans that she always made my husbands cake in..his is the 13th!
Now I make brownies in them, his favorite.
Your picture is such a treasure!
Since my birthday is on Halloween, I always get a Halloween decorated birthday cake from my favorite bakery. I think it keeps me feeling young when I see the "juvenile design" on it. Ha! I think it's great that you've kept that drawing all those years. She's a good artist like you! Hope you have a great birthday this month.
ReplyDeletewell Happy Birthday month to you
ReplyDeleteI have some old vintage heart shaped pans and made me a valentine cake last year LOL
friends & dogs are sooooooo nice
What a beautiful drawing and keepsake!! Love the heart shaped cake too! My birthday is right around Christmas Dec. 14th so it gets a little nuts, and my sister's is on Christmas!
ReplyDeleteMy only tradition that makes me feel special (my thighs not so much) is I but myself a small box of chocoaltes with nuts and caramel from this wonderful specialty chocolate shop near me, where everything is OUT OF THIS WORLD!! I totally indulge and enjoy that box of chocolates with ZERO guilt, and I recommend it! Happy early birthday, Amy!
This is such a cute painting...your friend is so talented! I had heart shaped pans, they were really old and no matter how much I buttered them, the cake always stuck! They're gone now!!
ReplyDeleteWell...my birthday is tomorrow! We are both February Birthday Girls! I am hoping to get treated to a dinner out and I have had my eye on a Kate Spade bag! :-D It may just be a gift to myself!! lol!
XO,
Jane
