My Shabby Bedroom Makeover Plan

I was sent this image and fell in love!
My bedroom will be loosely based on this room.
Dissecting this room to create a plan I look at:
  1. colors on walls and fabrics
  2. patterns in fabrics
  3. furniture styles
  4. lighting and accessories
My bedroom is larger than this room
but has slanted ceilings which are always a challenge.
I bought a mosquito net for over the bed.
But as in the photo above, it also hung at a tilt
because of the slant of the dormer roof.
Do you find this objectionable? I did.
I am considering wallpapering the wall behind the bed.
I love this RL pattern if the color was right...
This vintage floral could work but may be too flowery...
This pretty Thibeault paper may hit just the right note.
~~~~~~~~~~~
Currently the room has beautiful aqua silk panels
in this same fabric as these I was busy installing
for a client's bedroom.
On the floor are some Martha Stewart area rugs.
After an Ebay hunt I found the same fabric on the
bed in my inspiration picture.
Sorry, bad blurry picture...
My plan is to incorporate shades of pinks and blues in the bedding.
Walls are beige with white trim and light blue draperies,
although opposite of the inspiration photo,
 it is still the same palette.
I have a beautiful English styled bedroom set,
but it is dark wood, so that is a concern.
I need to remember a man sleeps in here too!
This dreadful picture *shudder*was how my room used to look.
Nothing shabby or romantic to be found anywhere.
Since then, I have given the oriental rug to my son.
I took down the dark blue panels,
and added the pale blue silk drapes and rugs.
That is as far as I had gotten until I saw the inspiration pic!
In a couple of weeks I will be unveiling my after photo.
Wish me luck!!
  1. What a beautiful inspiration photo. I love using photos, too. I don't try to COPY everything..only taking the inspiration.
    If Santa is really good to me, he will bring the comforter for the room I am getting ready to create. I've been buying the items, one by one, for almost a year. and I think I am about ready to start.:))
    The room you love is sooo pretty. I love the simple blue paint on the walls and the picture above the bed does the room PROUD. To me, it just makes that room.
    Good good luck with yours and I am anxious to see what you do.
    I am signing up to follow..hope you will come by, follow me and see MY room. It is French country and I, too, have an inspiration photo.:))
  5. Beautiful choices. I love the inspiration photo. It has the about the same wall color as we do. My husband is sleeping on floral pillowcases. So far he's survived.
    I like the idea of the wallpaper, it reminds me of the upstairs bedroom in my grandparents old farmhouse.
    Can't wait to see it.
  6. It's going to be beautiful, Amy! I love all of your wallpaper choices, especially the first. The middle is my favorite but if you're bedding will be your ebay find, it'll be too much as you said. Therefore, my next favorite is your favorite. ;) I really can't wait to see it. I love everything in your inspiration photo. It is so YOU. Anyhow, Happy Holidays. I'm catching up with all my favorites after a little break.
    xoxo,
  9. Amy,
    Inspiring rooms to drool over. As an interior designer myself, I find the inspired look for our living life style is simple French flea market.
    I will paint just about anything I get my hands on. In my older post you will see in my daughters room wood pieces that remind me of yours. I took a Pulaski tiger oak heirloom looking end table/wash stand and painted the whole piece breathing new life into it.
    If you are not afraid to paint you can lighten up your pieces with no cost then paint and achieve the look you are after.
    I just cannot wait to see the out-come of your room :) PLEASE!!! let me know when it is completed.
    Thank you so very much for your visits to my place.
    xx
  11. Hi Amy, I want to throw you a challenge (because I know how you love to paint every surface and every piece of furniture in every room a pastel color). Do you think you can leave this furniture for one room stained (that appears to have a nice finish on it?) and work with it and still be happy with your design in the end? What do you think would have to be done differently to make it work in the light and airy room you desire? Maybe incorporate added lighting? Sconces, extra accent lighting? I think it can be a breath of fresh air when furniture or walls are painted in the entire house and suddenly see 'stain' pop against paint elsewhere.
    Have fun - my own bedroom project reveal should happen about the same time as yours! :)
  13. I can't wait to see your photos. My bedroom has dark wood but I'm not going to change that. I have very pale pink walls and dusty rose curtains. Right now I have a pink and green Amish quilt but I want something with softer colors. I've been collecting lamps, calendars, desk accessories, shelves, pictures and more to put up. My friend is going to help me put everything us as a Christmas/Birthday gift. Santa gave me a new camera so I have to wait and save for new bedding.
  18. Hi Amy...
    I just read your sweet note that you left on my Christmas dining room, my friend and wanted to come over to meet you! Thank you so much for adding my blog to your list of blog follows! I have also added your delightful blog to my list! My friend, I took a few minutes and meandered through a few of your posts...ohhh, your home is absolutely gorgeous and I love your style! I am really looking forward to spending more time at your place. It's so busy with Christmas fast approaching...but I will be back!
    I just adore your inspiration photo for your bedroom! Ahhh...sooo very pretty and romantic as well! I love the beautiful aqua silk that you have chosen for drapes...love the rug as well! I can hardly wait to see the finished photos, my friend! What fun!!! I redo my bedroom a couple of times a year...kind of with the seasons and I sooo enjoy doing it! Of course, the change usually just involves changing the bedding and accessories.
    Thank you so much for sharing your bedroom and design plans with us...sooo interesting and fun!
    Sending you and your family wishes for a very Merry Christmas!
  19. That inspiration photo is beautiful, and I wish I had seen it a year ago when I was trying to work with a pink and blue similiar color scheme. As hard as I tried it never worked right. I have dark furniture too and eventually swithced to more creams and blues. Might be using the other pink and blue stuff for the summer, so I'll be interested to see how this works for you!
  20. Amy, I can't wait to see it. I love the ruffle and maybe even rosettes along the edge of the comforter/duvet. I couldn't really tell if there were rosettes, but if not, there should be! I am helping a friend redecorate her house right now, but everything has stopped for the holidays - even though she wanted her cabinets painted. You can only do so much! Hope you aren't going crazy and have a very Merry Christmas
  21. Hi. Look forward to seeing your bedroom makeover. My shabby chic guest room is in roses with pink and blue with neutral tan walls and white trim. It is one of my favorites and is going to be my display room for my items when not at a market. It has lots built-in bookshelves from when it was my daughter's room. Wishing you a Merry Christmas!
  22. This will be fun to watch again! I love the changes on the home page and the fact that you are always fresh! Just remember that Mr. Maison Decor needs to sleep in that bedroom and feel manly or he may buy another moving vehicle: front loader, excavator, or bulldozer!
  23. I thought you were saying that photo #2 was your room and I was like...."Why change it? It's perfection. So simple and white". But then I read again and see it was an example. Are you going to keep your furniture? I like that bed. I'd paint that bed white so fast it would make your husband's head spin. I think it's cool that you have a great big headboard.
    My head board is more like the inspiration photo #2. It's antique wrought Iron. My Dad surprised me with it long ago and my Mom painted it the perfect shade of pink...I thought it was just going to be my single girl's bed and they did too because they gave it to me right after college....but it's ended up being my permanent bed. My Dad even welded some pipe to the bottom to make it a little taller a few years ago.
    He came over one morning and told me to get out of the bed...cause he was going to make it taller. And he did. And he was right. It looked better. That man loved to weld...so he liked doing it. So I don't know that I can ever part with it.
    It would be perfect for the new direction you are going though.
  24. Amy that is a gorgeous inspiration picture. The feel of that room is so romantic and pretty. It looks like you have a great start to your room. I wouldn't worry about that brown bed at all. I have brown wood furniture mixed in with my white and it works great and still looks really shabby. I just make sure that I have odd numbers of a color because it looks better to the eye.
  27. I am inspired too!
    That photo is wonderful!
    I am with the others I would be painting that dark wood furniture at a drop of a dime.
    It just seems to dark to pull of the look from the photo.
    I am excited to see what you create!
    Hugs, Dolly
  29. ooh, I can't wait to see your new room, it's going to look fabulous! I love all the colors and fabrics! I think Mr. Maison Decor would be fine with whatever you do! Personally, I would paint the furniture, it would look incredible, but I understand your hesitation! xo
  32. those are all of my very favorite kinds of fabrics! I have been thinking about those drapes in my dining room- love the smocking at the top! Do you know the source for them? The ones in your photo almost have a hint of cream in them, and I'm thinking that's what I need instead of stark white.....I know PB had some in the past- not sure if they still do though. thanks for stopping by earlier! Happy New Year (and new decorating! ;)
