How to Pick Paint Colors: Magazines vs Real Life

Color: Benjamin Moore Aura in Woodlawn Blue #HC 147
Picking wall colors can be daunting, and the best way to find a good one
can be locating a color from an online image or a magazine, but then you must
follow through and get a sample of the color to put on your own walls.
The reason is that magazines can saturate or lighten up actual results and the
color will be very different than the one you admired.
Often asked questions on my blog are about my own wall colors.
They want to know the name and brand of the paint I use for certain rooms.
Our living room was painted a year ago in Woodlawn Blue.
This blue has a bit of green to it, and its such a pretty color.
Things that are more blue make the walls look green,
and things in the room that have more green make the walls look blue.
The color will be darker when it is cloudy outside or at nighttime.
The blue will vary on each wall, depending upon the lighting.
My camera may lighten up the color too, depending upon the setting
I use, but this color is pretty much how I think it looks, at least on my screen.
But take a look at how it looks in the current issue of Romantic Country magazine.
Its more aqua, and every color in the room is more intensified, from the
pinks to all of the blues.  The blue wall here is more aqua than this color really is,
so never pick a color from a magazine photo without testing it first.
That being said, I love love love this blue paint!
Color: Benjamin Moore Regal in Natural Elements #1515
Our dining room walls are a taupe color that has a warm tone.
Some taupes and greys are cool, and some are warm.
I have not tired of this neutral color one bit.
The woodwork is White Dove by BM.
This bench is in the dining room, and so the wall color
is the same as the rest of the room.
It is a nice neutral, very light and it appears to go with everything.
This is the same bench and wall in Romantic Country magazine.
The day of the shoot it was so gloomy and
so lighting was used to simulate daylight.
Notice how the wall color looks to have a green undertone.
My hallways all have the same color, Natural Elements, with White Dove trim.
Using one neutral color will unify the spaces when you have open spaces.
When I painted the living room walls blue, I had to pick an ending point for the
blue color, and you can see right there in the corner by the door how it looks.

Our bedroom was the most "styled room" in the photo shoot for Romantic Country,
as you will see below.  But here it is as we normally have it, mostly blue and white.
The wall color is also another pretty blue with a green tone.
Romantic Country Magazine image shows the walls to be more intensified.
So when you love a wall color in a magazine, beware!
Benjamin Moore Aura Spa in Simply White
Our master bathroom's walls are in last year's Color of the Year
by Benjamin Moore.  I used Aura Spa on recommendation of my paint
guy at the local paint shop and I hated this paint.  It is supposed to have a
built in agent to resist mold and mildew, which we really did not have any
issues with anyway.  What I found was that I needed three coats to cover
the beige paint that was on the walls, so the effort was incredible to just paint
the walls white.  Next time I would use plain Aura (as it has no VOCs) and
I think it would have been two coats to do what took three here.
But I digress, as we are talking about how paint colors differ from images
found in magazines and in real life.
Can white look different in a magazine?
The Romantic Country magazine image has lightened everything up and
all of the colors are intensified, and the white looks brighter.
I do love the color, Simply White.  My woodwork is White Dove.
The bathroom cabinet is the same as the wall color
 in the bedroom, Behr Contemplation.
Picking out samples from a paint store can be the most difficult thing to do,
and my recommendation is to pick what you are attracted to, then dial it down
and select a color similar but a lot lighter and a bit muddier.  It will look
more sophisticated instead of something that came out of a crayola color box.

Unless that is what you are going for, lol!
My son, Brandon, an artist from Los Angeles, picked this color out.
Turned out a month later Pantone picked a similar color
as the color of the year for 2017.
This color has more yellow in it, than our green does.
I would have gone with a color that was more subdued and darker,
but in the end it is a very fun color and everyone loves it.
It "needs" things on the wall to balance it out,
and the black and white is a great neutralizer to its boldness.
When Fifi O'Neill arrived for the shoot, she looked at the tv room
and said, "oh we won't be shooting this room, it is not romantic at all".
That made me laugh, and of course it is true.  It would have taken
a flower cart filled to the brim to bring romance to that space.

Photo Shoots and Farmhouse Mirrors

Love love love these Woodlawn blue walls...I am so happy with the color.
With every day I grow to like it more and more, which is a good thing.
With paint it can be a bit nerve wracking to pick a color and then discover
it really isn't what you had in mind after all.  So with that, I started thinking of
perhaps painting the dining room walls.  But I really love the simplicity
of how the room feels, so I am not sure I am ready to pull the paint trigger just yet.
I was considering painting the doors, and maybe that is all I would need for awhile.
One thing that I will be changing is the mirror in the room.  I found an amazing mirror
at AntiqueFarmhouse.com and it is going to make a huge difference in here.
This is the mirror I fell in love with, and it is four feet long and three feet wide.
A statement piece for sure!  I think it will convey more of the french farmhouse
look in the dining room that I am going for....
When Antique Farmhouse asked if I wanted to work with them, how could I resist?
They have loads of rustic, cottage, farmhouse style accessories,
from large to small items that can finish off your space,
which is exactly what I am hoping this beautiful mirror will do for my dining room.
The reason why I am extra motivated right now to get all of my rooms
looking extra pretty is because Fifi O'Neill is coming to shoot my home this spring!
Here she is looking through the camera lens at a shoot last year at My Desert Cottage.
Fifi and interiors photographer,  Mark Lohman will be doing their thing at my house!!
So all of the projects I planned to do this year at a leisurely pace, will now have to get done
just a bit more quickly!
Fifi is the author of books, like this one that is one of my faves, and
she is also the editor of several magazines, so I am not sure where my house
will be featured quite yet.  All I do know, is I want it to look the way I imagine it can look,
which in my mind is pretty amazing (hahah) I just have to finish my projects....
Like this one, with the help of Mr. Maison Decor, I scored on this antique French daybed
with the makers mark still welded to the frame.  I have to make a mattress and
cushions and pillows and all that stuff.  I imagine it sitting outside in the French courtyard
I created last year, which is almost finished, but not quite.
So while its still winter time, my mind is firmly planted in spring,
where photo shoots will be taking place, and things will be painted and new mirrors
will be hung, creating my vision of that french style home I aspire to create.
(source unknown)
So for now, this dream is still a dream...
but I am getting one step closer, one step at a time.

Prettiest new wall color!

Its been years since I have changed the wall color in my living room, which
means that it was a great color.  I never got sick of it but I started thinking that maybe
all my blues and greens would look better with a bluey greeny wall and that all of the white
would pop out more. Between the trim, the fireplace and the piano there is a lot of white.
So as I often do, I pondered this change for a brief period of time and then decided to
just go for it.  Some of the blues that I love and considered were
Palladium Blue and Glass Slipper, by Benjamin Moore.  After having a convo with
artist and friend Cindy Austin, she suggested Woodlawn Blue, a color I had forgotten all about!
And that is the color I went with...its more blue than green.  When you put green next to it
it looks very blue, but when you put blue next to it you can see the green.
Haha, I hope that is not too confusing.
The piano got turned, with the help of Mr. Maison Decor,
which opened the way to fit in my french provincial chair.
But the color is all wrong. But that won't stop me....
This is the toile I will be using to reupholster/slipcover my pink french chair
that was shown above.  I have yet to upholster anything, so this will be my debut.
I adore this linen toile, the colorway will be perfect and the style is very Frenchy!
You can also see the difference in wall color....and if I do tire of it, I can just repaint.
It just feels fresh and different to switch things up, you know?
Here is my awesome buddy Colby, he follows me around. When I first started painting I
knocked over the whole gallon with the lid on it. OMG. I really did!! It kind of pried open and then started pouring all over the wood floor. Colby wanted to lick it up! I had to try and run to get a dust pan and spatula and save the paint!  I was yelling at Colby while I retrieved the said items in the kitchen and I have to say he respected my orders and stood still until I came back.  I painted the room in one day. Up and down the ladder and squats galore.  Oh. My. Aching legs and butt. It took me about 6 hours to do it...there was a lot of cutting in.  Anyway I am very pleased with how it came out.  I changed up the artwork and mirror placement and rehung my white Pottery Barn smocked curtains.
This paint, AURA, by Ben Moore had no smell and it went on like a dream!
I am not being compensated to say this either...this is not a sponsored post, but it
has me thinking I should contact them and see if they want me to blog more about
their paint, as I LOVE painting!! Woodlawn Blue is in their historical colorway
and you just can't go wrong choosing one of those colors.
I have some super exciting news to share.  Matthew Mead and I will be
starting our own decorating YouTube channel!!! We are going to start shooting
tomorrow!! And I just found out that my home is going to be in another
magazine, by an editor I truly adore!! So its going to be a very fun winter and
springtime. One more good reason to try a new wall color.
Oh! And one  more exciting thing:
Maison Decor is back for the month of February in Boston!!
I am doing a POP UP SHOP in my son's shop at Pioneer Goods Co
at 764 Tremont Street Boston.  He is open Wednesday - Sunday.
I will dedicate a full blog post to my POP UP and show you
just what kind of things I am selling....
if you love Vintage French and Gilded and Pink, you won't
want to miss it!!
