Our Courtyard Wedding in Romantic Homes magazine and more French Chairs

The May issue of Romantic Homes magazine is on the stands and inside you will find a nice little feature on the courtyard wedding we had last September.  The cheery yellow and white cover is hard to miss, so look for it in Barnes and Noble, grocery stores, Walmart and other places like that.
Look at those darling slipcovers on the chairs!! Lots of spring inspiration inside this issue,
as well our wedding feature.
Here is a sneak peek, and it tells the story of how I conjured up the fairy tale theme with a French twist to guide the decorating angle of the wedding.  All the advice is applicable to throwing a party as well, so I hope you enjoy the narrative as well as the beautiful photos taken by Matthew Mead.
Our wedding had guests arriving inside the home, and then ushered to the outdoor area where a tent stood waiting for the festivities, so both images inside and outside are part of the spread.
Romantic Homes is my go to for French inspired romantic living ideas,
and I am honored to be included.
As with any magazine feature, a lot of cuts must be made, yet some of my favorite images and elements were not shown. If you have read the article and would like to see more, this is for you!  It was hard to tell the relationship of each space to each other from the published photos, most likely due to our spaces being small and rather nook and crannyish.
Here the tent looks up to the arbor where the wedding vows were performed.
We used all the little garden spaces for different purposes, as you can see on the upper level where the bride and groom are chatting in front of the arbor, where they had exchanged wedding vows, with the Boston skyline in the background, while the musicians played in front of the garden shed.
The tent sat just below, beside the house in our small pea gravel courtyard.
My favorite element in the wedding that didn't get mentioned was the live event artist.
Sheila Foley is one of the best in the business, and happens to live in the greater Boston area.
She came early and painted the background scene on her canvas, which was the interior of the tent leading to the cabbage garden and arbor where the vows were exchanged.  I love how she included the chandelier and tulle draped from the ceiling of the tent.  As the wedding progressed, Sheila added guests and the wedding couple into the painting, while we all ate, drank and made merry.

Before the festivities  I came out to see if everything was ready to go... Sheila is at her station with her art supplies and easel.  Because it had rained, we needed to set up a table umbrella to protect both artist and artwork!
You can see the white picket fence beyond where the bride would emerge to climb the old stone steps to the grassy terrace to say her vows.  Sheila had the background ready for adding all the details, including champagne bottles, the french settee, floral arrangements and of course all the people!
This is a sneak peek collage of the painting progression so far!
I have been able to see bits of it on Sheila's Instagram account: @sfoleyeventpainter
I can't wait to reveal the entire painting and already imagine it in a fancy French gilded frame, hanging on our walls, reminding us all of that special day.
And one last garden element that was missing....
Our cabbage garden!
White Belgian mums and ornamental green and white cabbages planted in a formal layout.
The urns were filled with more cabbages and then roses in florist water vials
were tucked in between the large cabbage leaves.
Simple.  Elegant.  And very French.
Speaking of French~
I had the good fortune to land a pair of plume back gilded chairs
in the Louis XVI style.  They are truly marvelous little chairs, all hand carved with gold leaf.
Destined for my bathroom for now.  I adore old and French, and these fit the bill.

Gilt Louis XVI Music Chairs

Lovely old gilded French chairs. I have a weakness for them.
When I saw this sweet pair at an estate sale auction,
I couldn't resist scooping them up.
Where they will end up in my house, I am not sure of yet,
but I generally just buy things I love and they find a place somewhere.
The details of the chairs just were so unusual with a backsplat depicting a violin and a cornucopia.  All the details are hand carved, and you can see the inconsistency that hand carved
pieces have, when you look closely at the beaded details and other carved elements.
The chairs are so darling, and seem sturdy enough to sit on,
but because of their age and diminutive size,
I will use them as ornamentation rather that extra seating.
In the meantime we are all suffering from cabin fever with the snow covering the ground after a blizzard dumped 18" on us in Boston.  Ugh.  I have a fierce desire to rearrange all the furniture in this room, and it happens every year when I can't stand the winter for much longer.
I know the dogs feel the same way.
Piper loves to pose for the camera, however Colby does not.
Many ask where is Colby?  Here he is, he gave me three seconds to snap the photo
and then wandered off while Piper maintained her pose.
Colby was wondering why did I pull away the dog bed from the fireplace.
To take pics of course! I don't remember seeing the hearth since
last fall as its been covered with a big old dog bed.
An Easter basket for Reeve sits on the music chair.
Maybe after Easter, Spring will finally arrive!

A Gilded Pink Toile Christmas Table

Its all about Holiday Entertaining in today's posts (and all week long)
as part of Designthusiasm's Set + Style blog hop.
A special welcome to those who have just arrived from
my friend Courtney's ever gorgeous French Country Cottage!
But before we begin...
Can I just tell you all that I got my copy of this magazine
yesterday in my mailbox?! That is my living room on the cover!!
The COVER!! (Yes I am yelling.)
Ok, ok.... Just had to share.  I am over it. (Not)
Now back to our gorgeous table features.
Pink and Gilded and Toile for Christmas?
Yes. Yes. And Yes!
Why not use one's favorite things at Christmas?!
Christmas means its the perfect time for fantasy and fairytale decor.
Small twinkling trees are the perfect way to set the mood.
Layer in some of your favorite things with a bit of whimsy for good measure,
like these tiny white angel wings that I found at Joann's fabrics.
They came in pink too, and would have been so pretty....
But I wasn't sure then how I was going to use the little white wings when I bought them.
(The point being:  if you see something that captures you, buy it.
You will find a way to use it, I guarantee it.)
Gold always elevates the mood, doesn't it?
These striped gold and white candles
(a knockoff of the high priced lovely Ana Candles that I have in my sconces)
were a happy find at Marshalls~a box of six for the same price.
Gold lusterware salad plates set atop gold rimmed dinner plates,
all vintage finds from various New England shops.
Pink and celery green toile placemats were a set I made years ago
when I couldn't find what I wanted. They add a feminine French touch.
Repousse candlesticks in silverplate are new additions from a charming
vintage shop in Dover, New Hampshire, called Just The Thing.
A pair of grocery store topiaries were transplanted to some self-watering
cache pots for a finished look. Rosy red cranberries were sprinkled about on the table,
inside the vase, and on top of the topiaries potting soil.
Grocery stores have so much goodness for decorating these days!!
And if pink isn't your thing....
think how easy it would be to change out the pink elements for red or white
if you wanted a more traditional Christmas look.
Happy Holidays to you all, now let the parties begin!
Head on over to the wonderful blog of Sand and Sisal who is next up
on the tour.  Then check out the rest of my design blogger friends
to see their special Christmas tables, it will certainly put you in the mood!

Gilt Fauteuil like Marie Antoinette's

This antique gilded French fauteuil is the centerpiece in our bathroom.
I was going to upholster it, and someday I will finally get to that project.
For now we use it as a towel caddy or toss our robes over it.
Fauteuil is an armchair with a wooden frame with exposed sides and upholstered arms.
This chair style originated in France in the early 17th century.
Marie Antoinette had tons of them all around her palaces.
So its not really a surprise I am attracted to it!
It has the original gilt finish and it looks quite regal, with its frame exposed.
One I photographed at Marie's palace bedroom in Versaille is below.

This one is right next to her bed.  She probably never sat in it, as it was likely
for her lady in waiting.  (Of course most of these pieces are reproductions so no one
from the high court sat in it!) Its quite beautiful, note the upholstered arms, and open sides.
I think mine is just as fancy, if you care to compare!
As you must know by now, I love most things with French style.
The other French touches in the bathroom are the closet doors I
added molding to a few years ago.  Recently the bath got a mini update
with the addition of a new countertop in an ocean aqua quartz.
That spurred a new color scheme of white and blue.
I painted the cabinetry in a pale aqua blue to play up the colors in the quartzite
and then added a few blue crystals to the chandeliers above.
A vintage dressing stool I did over in pink might get a makeover someday.
But for now it sits in the dressing corner next to the tub.
An old fashioned lingerie chest is a new addition and it
tucks into this corner near my dressing table like it was meant to be.
A Craigslist hunt turned up this chest, and as many of you know,
furniture does not hold its value, and you can find just about anything
you need or want on Craigslist, including deals on furniture.

Gigantic blue and gold tiebacks hold back some contemporary panels
at the window.
When it comes time to upholster this beautiful beast,
I have been thinking of a powder blue velvet.  Not aqua or
robins egg blue, just a perfect powder blue.

Our Inspiration Wall: Chalk Art and Gilded Frames

Our shop in Reading has a lot of painted and embellished
sample boards that we have made over time using different
products.  Many are Chalk Paint sample boards, and then
there are those that we have used more decorative techniques
by adding combinations of pearlescent,
 gilded, crackled and transfer mediums.
I noticed it was hard for shoppers to figure out what they were looking
at, so I came up with the idea of grouping samples together
inside of vintage gilded frames.  I had been purchasing old gilded
frames at auction. Most had ugly artwork or broken bits so I was
able to get a good deal on them.  Colin cut out backing boards out of
luann board and painted them with traditional chalkboard black paint.
He mounted the boards inside the frames and they looked stunning!
I could have just put them in the shop and sold them like that,
and maybe I will now that we have our inspiration wall finished,
After the boards were put in the frames I laid out groupings of samples
and Justin got to work creating his magical Chalk Art fonts.
He does it all freehand, and will look at various fonts online for ideas.
You can see how he starts off by spacing the letters with simple stick lettering.
Then he starts getting creative, which is when the magic happens!
He is working in the back room where we hold our workshops.
During the week we usually have various projects in different states
of progression on the table.  You can see the other boards in the back, as well
as a simple sample board I am doing using an
Efex molding for an upcoming class.
More on that at the end of the post.
AFter he got his lettering all finished, Justin glued down our samples.
This board is meant to show what finishes you will learn when you
take our popular Chalk Paint® Introductory Workshop.
I love this frame, by the way! Look at the moldings on this baby!
We had a few boards made up showing off the Artisan Enhancement line that we carry.
There are many different decorative things you can do with this line, including
various crackling techniques, image transfers, foiling, stone finish and pearlized finishes.
Now when you come in to get inspiration we hope our boards inspire
in a more obvious way!
How wonderful were those incredible antique frames?
You can easily add embellishing appliques to any frame to get
a similar look to a vintage plaster over wood or carved frame
by using a combination of Efex moldings onto a simple frame.
I am working on different boards using our new Efex latex molding line
we carry in house and online.  This one is a very fine detailed ribbon
applique. You can see a pencil tracing mark around it. When you apply
the applique, you just roughly trace around your piece, then apply the contact cement
to the board and the back of the piece, wait 20 minutes, then stick together and press
down to make good contact.  The tracing line just helps you see where
to put the cement, and where to stick your applique.
Then after about a half hour you can paint right over it.
I am using French Linen Chalk Paint by Annie Sloan.
Push the paint into all the crevices of the molding and then
brush them out so there is no globbing.
I finished it off with a wash to get this lovely Gustavian look.
You can see all kinds of moldings from the Efex line in our shop
as well as online.  Imagine taking a flat panel door on a cabinet or a closet
and creating an antique French looking vibe!
Or make fancy frames for your own fabulous chalk board to hang
in your kitchen or dining room!
You can join us at a new Applique and Molding Workshop,
coming up next month! We will be making a wall plaque using the Efex
moldings and decorative paint finishes.  You will see how easy it is to
plan a project with Efex latex moldings. You will lay it out, cut, glue and paint
and up with stunning results!
Rounding out the week finds me wearing my designer hat.
Today I will be styling a clients home.
Did you know I am also a HomeGoods Designer?
I am part of a hand full of national designers in the HomeGoods
Happy by Design Pinterest program!
Four carriages and two rolling flat bed carts were filled
for this exciting home styling project.
I will be sharing the finished results soon.
