Meet the dogs of Maison Decor

I wanted to formally introduce our dogs today.  We have two dogs~this is Dillon and he we found him on a Pet rescue internet search. We fell in love with him at first sight and nicknamed him Cow-doggy because he  looks like a cow.  He lived in a shelter in Oklahoma and we had him flown out to Boston, where we picked him up at the airport. They charge more to fly a dog than they do a person, I will say that.  He was in a large crate, and now that we know how he is, it must have been a very difficult trip, because he hates being locked up in a crate.  I don't blame him one bit. I guess some dogs love their crates, but I don't think Dillon ever was crate trained, and he just gets nervous in an enclosed space like that.
He has a big brown spot over his right eye~
While the rest of his face is white. His head has extra soft fur,
kind of like chinchilla. Dillon is a cuddler.
Dillon always has to be walked on a lead or he will take
off on an adventure forgetting how to get home.
Here he is on Martha's Vineyard when we visited my parents this year.
That's him squeezed in between my mom and
my stepson on her white couch!  I told you he was a cuddler.
And my mom is very cool with having the dogs visit.
This summer we rented a cottage by a lake in NH
and it was the hottest week of the summer.
Almost every day was over 100 degrees,
which is pretty hot in New Hampshire.
It was so nice to jump in the lake,
but poor Dillon was afraid of the water~
So we came up with a plan to get him over his fears...
first we coaxed him onto the dock...
And then down the steps by giving him
pieces of hotdog...one little bit at a time.
It took so long hubs sat in a chair in the lake waiting
patiently for Dillon to get brave enough to venture further.
And finally he forgot he was in water
and just started walking around! What a triumph!
We were so thrilled about our big boys accomplishment~
but all he cared about was getting more hotdog!
Every summer I take a pic of hubs and his son facing out towards the lake.
This year Dillon spontaneously joined them in the pose.
How my heart melted when he went over and sat there.
Our dogs go where ever we go~Dillon is tethered by a long lead on my parents deck as he would be gone in a heartbeat to explore the woods~Tobey is in his usual position, as close to his mother as he can get.
If I sit on the couch, Tobey hops right up and loves sitting with me.
When  I am taking pics in any given room for the blog,
Tobey barges right in and poses. Like a statue.
Won't move unless I force him out of the way,
but he comes right back in.
So the best way to keep him out of my photos is to put him outside.
Tobey never runs off, he hangs around the entryway and doesn't go very far.
Here is the dynamic duo. Tobey in the lead...
Tobey is top dog in the house,
and has Dillon convinced~so it works for him.
I think they call it the Napolean complex.
Dillon is always chilling,
and Tobey can't relax unless I am sitting down.
He will stand until I sit down. Always.
Dillon could care less what I am doing when I am puttering around the house~
Sometimes I don't even notice that Dillon is in the room.
He is so quiet and calm.
He is getting to be middle aged now.
That first pic of him was when he was one and a half.
We adore Dillon. He brings us so much joy~
I have to say he is my most beloved pet I have ever had.
 Handsome and more handsome
This is my son's dog Kingsley. Sometimes we babysit him,
and he often comes to our house for parties.
Kinglsey also has a Napoleon complex and is not
afraid of trying to flex his muscles with Dillon.
I told you Dillon was very chill.
Kingsley may just not be that bright...
Winter is here, which means walks everyday through the snow.
Or the freezing cold.
Three times a day.
Luckily Dillon hates the cold and the snow and the rain for that matter too.
He gets his business tended to and then runs back to the house quickly,
which totally works for me!
I know this story was mostly about Dillon~
but Tobey is cute too and tends to his own affairs when outside
and returns quickly as well.
He is a little bully boy. He was purchased at a pet shop,
but from now on all our dogs will have to be rescue dogs.
It seems only right as so many dogs need homes.
Tobey is quite the little watch dog I have to say~
Well, where ever we go, they go~
they love to go for rides and are great travelers.
If you are a dog lover, then you will understand how
I can post so many random pics about my dogs.
And this concludes the formal introduction of  Tobey and Dillon.
The End.

Wide Angle Lens Rentals

Sharing a little camera info here~I never knew you could rent lens or camera equipment. But you can as I found out when Brenda, a college photography  student, came to help me take pictures.
She arranged for a wide angle lens rental, as it is great for shooting interiors.
You can rent lens for your particular brand of camera.
She has a Nikon and I had just bought a Canon.
The rental was supposed to be for her Nikon,
but serendipity reigned, as I had the Canon
and so we used the lens on mine instead.
I took this shot of her (with the handy iPhone) shooting the mini hutch.
You can see the wide angle lens sitting on the counter nearby.
These are mostly day one beginner shots,
but the point is having used a wide angle lens now,
I can capture more of a room than ever before.
Here you can see into the dining room when I am capturing
the windows on the right of the living room.  I was amazed!
And my tiny kitchen was able to be captured
from the left cabinets to the right~!
And from the kitchen window all the way to the dining room french doors!
The thing that is not so great about the wide angle lens
and something you have to watch for when you open it
up to full wide angle, is that it can stretch proportions out.
You can see it most in the ceiling medallion.  It looks like it is at a slant~
I will probably rent this again, when I redo a room or spring
comes rolling around and I want to recapture a room again.

Brenda rented it from LensRentals.com.
The terms were six days at $70 and it included a prepaid return shipping label,
which required bringing it back to a UPS store and having it scanned in.
No compensation with this lens rental company~
just sharing with all the other photog junkies out there!
Keep shooting~!

Pink in the dining room

Feels so good to get all the Christmas things put away,
and get this room stripped back down.

Just some pink roses on top of a ruffled runner
and I feel like I can breathe again~
 Its Shabby Chic for sure~
Calming colors of that funny blue yet green color I love so much,
mixed with a touch of pink
This is the view of the dining room
when you come walking in from the kitchen~
And this is the dining room looking back towards the living room and the kitchen.
I was kind of wishing my mirror was still pink...
I am finding I like smaller amounts of pink now~
Little doses of pink do a world of good
Supermarket roses cut down to make a compact and modern bouquet
It was all this room needed~
To make me love it all over again~

Even my MIL murmured that the room looked pretty!

Wishes can come true

Welcoming in the first day of 2012 finds me excited and reflective.
I am so grateful for all I have~and so excited to start another year.
Dream it, Wish it, Do it is a saying around this house~
encouraging one's self to dare to wish and then accomplish!
Discovering blogland has unleashed the creative forces inside me
in a deeper way than ever I have ever experienced.
On New Years Eve I happily spent my time drawing and painting.
Mr. Maison Decor was preparing to tame the lions
down at the police station on the midnight shift.
So as he went off to bed early for his prework nap,
and I spent most of the evening creating.
I will be sharing this project later this week~
it is something that stretched my creative tendons.
So grateful and excited to have the Canon DSRL camera~and look what I learned already. Trying to move away from Auto focus into custom settings I discovered "Creative Autofocus".  The main reason I did not like auto is that you cannot eliminate the flash, and since my house tends to be dark, it was popping off all the time, creating an image like you see above. This is our remote control.  Hubs snapped this pic with Autofocus.  It is nice and clear~but look how it looks on Creative AutoFocus.
This picture was taken ten minutes later. Same interior lighting, but now I could control it by selecting that the flash be off, I was able to brighten the picture taking setting and make the background blur. You can make the background sharper or blurrier with Creative Auto. You can lighten every pic or darken every pic until you change the settings again. It is so much better!!
I was amazed at how much better this picture was. Another wish I want to fulfill this year is to learn how to take better pictures by truly understanding the camera and what it is capable of doing. I will be sharing what I learn here and there along the way~so if you are on the learning curve of DSLRs I am hoping you will find this helpful.
The winter is a good time for reading and learning and being creative.
It has yet to snow in Boston, with the exception of one freak storm early on.
I find once there is snow cover, it makes me feel like
cooking stews and soups and reading by the fireplace and painting and sewing.
I also read so many great books on design in 2011 and I will be sharing these with you too.  My latest read was Patina Style, which was a Christmas gift, and it really resonated with me. Last Christmas I got Barbara Streisand's book, My Passion for Design, and it was a tremendous book, one of the best I have ever read! Reading design books is one of my favorite past times, always tons of inspiration in the pages from so many different perspectives.
My best wishes for the coming year to all
of my blog readers, followers and friends.
A special wish goes out to Nita who had a difficult year
and I know better things await her in 2012.
Wish it, Dream it, Do it!
